"I am because we are"
I just finished watching the documentary “I AM BECAUSE WE ARE”. It’s a film narrated by Madonna, exploring the lives of children in Malawi who have been orphaned by HIV/AIDS, and their immense suffering. The documentary made me realize the bleakness and negativity that Tricia and I will be encountering. It’s been easy for me to look forward to this mission trip as a fun Christian experience. This film was a reminder of the reality that we will encounter. What I found most striking was that some of the leaders of villages have resisted changing traditions/customs despite knowing that it contributes to the spread of HIV/AIDS. One village chief stated that their sexual customs have been around for multiple generations and that AIDS is a modern problem that will pass. This is why it’s so important to educate the children of Malawi so that their generation can break the cycle. I encourage you to view this documentary and gain knowledge of what you are supporting. You can view the film for free online on the website HULU.COM. Just type in the search box, “I am because we are”, and it will direct you to the film.
